A second California man was convicted July 29 for his role in a fraud ring that persuaded a 64-year-old woman to hand over about $500,000 in cash and gold, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.
A man, Anil Kumar, 36, of Fresno, California, was involved in a group with another man, Amit Bhanwala-Singh, 32, of Clovis, California, and other unknown individuals who allegedly used phone scams to target older and vulnerable citizens.
Authorities said the woman received a scam text purporting to be from Amazon and called the number included in the message.
A co-conspirator posing as a federal agent then told her she was under investigation for money laundering.
The DA's office said she was persuaded to deliver cash and gold three times to various cities in California with promises the assets would be returned once the investigation ended.
After the third delivery, the woman contacted Truckee police when she was asked to surrender additional money from her retirement account.
Truckee police coordinated with Reno police and the U.S.
Secret Service on a sting operation because the woman had been traveling to Reno to purchase gold tied to the scheme.
Kumar and Bhanwala-Singh acted as couriers at these deliveries, and were arrested during the operation.
Bhanwala-Singh was sentenced to 35 years after being found guilty of exploitation of an elderly person and attempted obtaining money under false pretenses.
He will be eligible for parole after 14 years.
Kumar's sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 24 before Washoe County Judge David Hardy.
He faces up to 40 years in prison.
The DA's office urged the public to remain vigilant against unsolicited calls, texts or emails.
