Why Western Washington communities are coming out for night markets 6%

The Seattle area isn't known for its nightlife.
But a small trend of night markets has emerged across Western Washington, drawing locals out for afterhours community.
Seattle's Columbia City held its first night market in late 2020.
Puyallup started its own night market in 2021.
Lacey got one in 2022.
Renton's Fairwood neighborhood started another in 2023.
"My night market started as a request from the community," said Sunny Saunders with Sunny Jack Events, noting that vendors around Bremerton noticed other night markets popping up around the region and asked for one of their own.
She created a night market on the Bremerton Boardwalk in 2024.

Bremerton needed more things to do in the community and the Bremerton Night Market was born from that.
Over the last 3 years we have been able to grow the market to over 50 makers, food trucks, entertainment, and more."

The Seattle region might not be known for its afterhours activities, yet more locals are emerging into the eventide to go hang out at the market.
Sure, there have long been a handful of mostly annual events scattered across the calendar (such as the annual night market in the Chinatown-International District, or Bellevue's New Year's Eve night market).
But the more recently formed night markets are designed to be regular community events, at least over the spring through fall months.

Each one is not only an opportunity for small businesses and foodies, they are an expression of the community; a local experience exclusive to that night shared with neighbors.
"I think because it's a community hub," said Leah Morgan, who founded the Tacoma Night Market in 2018, which now is held in a warehouse off South Tacoma Way.
"To me, it feels really natural and not at all surprising that people are looking for places and ways to be with one another that is also low-level commitment."
"It opened up opportunities for families to come out and do something that was fun, silly, and interesting," she said.
"But it's also a date night, or a prefunk to something with friends.
It hits all these markers."
Many of these new events draw inspiration from night markets common in Asian countries, where they are a fixture of the economy.
Growing up in Taiwan, night markets were a part of daily life for Jason Huang, founder of the SWAE Night Market in Lacey.
"Being born in Taiwan, which is the Mecca of all night markets, I thought [Thurston County] was an interesting place and opportunity to replicate something like that stateside, and feature all the local foods," he said.
"In Thurston County, it's not as diverse and cultural as the bigger cities ...
I took a chance on it."
Huang started the SWAE Night Market in an empty lot in 2022 with just 15 vendors.
Today, it's the official night market for the city of Lacey and is regularly packed with patrons (tip: circle the block a few times to find parking).
While there are vendors selling books and crafts, his event leans into a wide array of food.
"With respect to those vibrant night markets overseas, especially with those ones that I grew up attending, I wanted that sense of community," Huang said.
"I wanted that sense of cultural food.
Just the entire event.
That is more meaningful.
It's inclusive.
Everyone is welcome.
It's a place for people to gather, have a good time.
That's the focus."

That's an experience Doc Wilson is familiar with.
Years before founding the Columbia City Night Market in Seattle, he was walking through the streets of Trà Vinh in Vietnam.
"All of a sudden I turn this corner and there are people everywhere, kids, adults families, and they are just shopping, hanging, and being in the community," Wilson said.
"I'm thinking, 'This is really, really nice.'
And it happened every day.
It was the same way in Cambodia.
It was the same way when I was in Thailand."
Back in Seattle, Wilson founded Peace Peloton, a non-profit focused on supporting Black-owned businesses.
It occurred to him that something like a night market could help with this mission.
"We certainly couldn't set it up like the markets I witnessed in other countries, but we could do our own thing here," he said.
"So, imagine ... you're walking on the street ... you hear a lot of loud commotion and now all of a sudden, you are a part of the commotion, you're in this mix.
You wandered off of Rainier Avenue.
There's 12 different restaurants, there's a shopping mall, and by the way, turn right and there's ice cream.
What's this?
It's a beer garden.
And there is a stage where performing artists are.
And the only thing you paid is the energy to move, to kick your legs to this space."
The Columbia City Night Market happens year round, rain or shine.
