A new storytelling initiative is collecting conversations between American strangers in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary.
In St.
Louis and other cities, participants will be paired for recorded conversations that will eventually be housed in the Library of Congress.
Nearly 10,000 people have already registered ahead of the project’s July 7 start, said StoryCorps founder David Isay.
The final recordings also will be shared with the participants.
“We live in a moment when we don't talk to our neighbors,” Isay noted.
“People feel isolated, they feel unheard, they feel alone, like no one cares about their stories.
I can think of no more patriotic activity than getting to know someone who's a stranger and honoring them and having them become part of American history.”
The initiative, 250Connect, is a collaboration between StoryCorps and NPR Morning Edition.
More information is at connect250.org.
