Dean Robert Potter, 83, passed away Friday, July 17th, 2026 at Edward Hospital in Naperville after a very courageous four years of battling various illnesses including being on dialysis.
Dean was born on April 24, 1943 in Sandwich, IL to Glendon and Anna (Tuntland) Potter.
Dean is survived by his wife, Glenda.
They were married for 63 1/2 years.
His Sons, Michael (Victoria) of North Carolina and Matthew (Kendra) of Somonauk.
His grandchildren, Xavier (Kaitlyn) Potter of Florida, McKenna (Nathan) Willig of Texas and Morgan (friend Richard Armour) of Somonauk.
He is also survived by his in-laws Roger and Helen Kitner, Curtis and Gail Kitner, Doris and Neil Miller and Santina Potter.
Also, many nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews and special friend since kindergarten, Robert Whiteis.
Also loved by his grandpuppies, Sadie and Maisie.
Dean was a graduate of Sandwich High School Class of 1961.
During high school he was a good player on the football, basketball, track and baseball teams.
After high school Dean went to Illinois State college for 1 1/2 years where he played on the football team.
He also attended many classes at Illinois Benedictine College.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Glendon and Anna; His 6 year old son, Jeremiah David; His brothers, Donald, Jerry and David; His Sister-in-laws, Roycie and Ginny; And his in-laws, Glenn and Celestine Kitner.
Dean was never afraid of work, sometimes working a full time job plus part time jobs to support his family.
Starting very young with a paper route, detasseling corn, grocery store stock boy, Oatman’s Dairy, Carpenter, CTS Knights, painter, roofer, gas station attendant, bartender, farm hand, and tech with Taylor Freezers.
His main job was at Caterpillar Tractor retiring after 35 years in 2000.
He started out in the paint booth.
He worked 30 years in various management positions.
Dean was well known for his wonderful voice.
His first singing engagement was when he was 6.
He was missing his two front teeth so he went around to all the Sandwich schools singing “all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!”
Dean was a lifelong member of the Federated Church of Sandwich.
Having sung in the choirs there since the age of 10.
Music and singing being a large portion of his life.
He loved singing with the adults choir and had many solos also.
Not only singing in the choir, he served on many of the church committees, but some of them two or more times.
He had sung at over 100 weddings.
The last being last year at his granddaughters wedding.
He was 81.
Other singing opportunities included over 50 funerals, all the Sandwich Lions Club Variety Shows, 22 years with the Yorkville Big Band, many churches as a visitor, the show the Music Man and Caterpillar Girls Clubs Variety Shows.
Once he sang at a Caterpillar produced show and won first place, $500.
Dean also was community minded, serving in positions including being a past president of the Sandwich Lions Club, President of the Sandwich Sports Boosters, and 8 years on the Sandwich School Board.
He also was a tutor for math, reading, and spelling at all 3 Sandwich Grade School.
He also was a pencil pal for students at Woodbury School.
Dean enjoyed his time when he coached Little League, Pony League and Legion baseball.
Dean continued in sports all his adult life having golfed on a league, bowled on three different teams and played on the town team baseball and fast pitch softball until age 50.
He was the catcher.
His favorite was fishing, he was an avid fisherman.
Having gone many years into Canada with a group of friends.
Also Minnesota with family and friend trips.
Many years were spent casting for Walleye.
Dean never met a stranger.
He could have a great conversation with anyone he met.
He was loved by many.
His greatest joy was the love he had for his wife, sons and grandchildren and spending time with them and attending any of their activities.
Memorials may be given to the Federated Church of Sandwich, the Open Door at Sandwich or the Senior Citizens at Sandwich.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Beverage Family Funeral Home, 104 Terry St.
Sandwich, IL 60548.
A funeral service will be held the next day, Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at the Federated Church, 403 N.
Main St.
Sandwich, IL 60548.
A luncheon will follow.
