President Donald Trump's May revenge tour remains unabated, with Rep.
Thomas Massie, R-Ky., the latest casualty.
Massie lost his Republican primary Tuesday for Kentucky's 4th Congressional District, becoming the latest GOP lawmaker defeated after drawing Trump's political wrath.
Newsmax and DecisionDesk HQ called the race for Trump-backed Ed Gallrein, about 90 minutes after polls closed.
With about 69% of the votes counted, Gallrein was at 53.8% and Massie at 46.2%.
Gallrein defeated the 10-term congressman after a bruising and expensive primary that evolved into a national test of Trump's influence inside the Republican Party.
The president had targeted Massie over disagreements involving government spending, foreign policy disputes, and criticism of Republican leadership.
Massie, first elected in 2012, built a national profile as a libertarian-leaning conservative willing to oppose both parties and frequently bucked GOP leadership.
But his independence increasingly put him at odds with Trump, who threw his support behind Gallrein and urged Republican voters in the district to remove the incumbent from office.
"Bad Congressman Tom Massie voted against Tax Cuts, the Border Wall, our Military and Law Enforcement," Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social.
"Actually, he voted against almost everything that is good.
The Worst Republican Congressman in History.
Kentucky, vote the bum out on Tuesday.
We can't live with this troublemaker for another two years.
He is a true negative force!!!"
The race became one of the most expensive House primaries in U.S. history, with outside groups and political organizations flooding Northern Kentucky with advertising and campaign spending.
Trump allies framed the contest as an opportunity to defeat a Republican congressman they viewed as disloyal to the president and obstructive to the party's agenda.
Massie attempted to portray himself as a constitutional conservative resisting pressure from Washington power brokers, arguing he represented the district rather than national political interests.
He also highlighted his record on spending, surveillance, and limited government.
The defeat nevertheless marked another significant victory for Trump as he continues demonstrating his ability to shape Republican primaries and punish lawmakers who openly challenge him.
He backed a successful challenge to Sen.
Bill Cassidy, R-La., who finished third in Louisiana's primary on Saturday.
Rep.
Julia Letlow, whom Trump endorsed, will face John Fleming in a June 27 runoff election.
Earlier this month, several Indiana state Senate Republicans backed by Trump opponents lost after refusing to support a redistricting effort championed by the president and his allies.
Gallrein now becomes the overwhelming favorite in the general election in the heavily Republican district, where GOP nominees traditionally dominate in November.
