ALBANY — Two Albany city workers were injured in an explosion Tuesday at the Department of General Services headquarters building.
One of the injured workers, Wayne Brennan, is a battalion chief who has served with the Albany Fire Department for more than 30 years, according to two people briefed on the matter.
The other victim is a general services worker.
His identity has not been released.
In a brief statement, the Albany Police Department said officers were summoned around 3:15 p.m. to the large building at 1 Richard J.
Conners Blvd. after a reported explosion at a gas pump.
Firefighters arrived two minutes later and brought a flash fire at the fuel area under control in seven minutes, according to Albany Fire Chief Joseph Gregory.
The two men suffered severe burns, according to Gregory.
They were treated at the scene by fire department and emergency personnel.
The city worker was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Brennan was taken by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center, which has a special burn unit for critical injuries.
“While this incident continues to unfold, we ask the Albany community, brother and sister firefighters, and the public in general to keep our member and his family in your thoughts,” the union representing the city’s firefighters wrote in a post on social media.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
Police Officer Derek Ellis, a department spokesman, said more information will be released is the investigation unfolds.
The explosion took place at a maintenance building where city vehicles from multiple departments are fueled.
There had been temporary fuel pumps at the site for months that were apparently being calibrated and replaced recently, one of the people briefed on the matter said.
