The Asahikawa District Court in Hokkaido on Monday sentenced a 23-year-old woman to 27 years in prison over the 2024 death of a 17-year-old high school girl who was made to sit naked on the railing of a suspension bridge before she fell into the Ishikari River.
According to the indictment, Riko Uchida became angry after the high school girl, from the city of Rumoi, Hokkaido, used Uchida’s image on social media without permission.
Between the night of April 18 and the early hours of April 19, 2024, Uchida conspired with others to force the girl into a car at a roadside station in Rumoi, assault and confine her, then take her to Kamui bridge on the outskirts of Asahikawa.
There, prosecutors said, the girl was stripped naked, made to sit on the bridge railing and filmed while apologizing.
Uchida and others allegedly shouted phrases such as “fall off” and “die” before the girl fell into the river.
Uchida had been charged with confinement, murder and nonconsensual indecent assault resulting in death.
She had denied intent to kill and argued that she had not carried out the act constituting murder, testifying: “I had absolutely no intent to kill.
I also did not cause her to fall from the bridge.”
Prosecutors sought 27 years, describing Uchida as “the ringleader and principal offender” and arguing that the “extremely cruel and malicious” crime had “trampled on the victim’s dignity.”
They maintained that repeated violence, threats and humiliation drove the girl to believe she had no option but to fall from the bridge, even if Uchida did not physically push her.
The defense, meanwhile, argued that Uchida’s actions did not constitute murder.
During the sentencing, a man burst into the courtroom through a back door, exclaiming “27 years is far too lenient,” calling the verdict “ridiculous” and stating that Uchida “deserves the death penalty,” according to reports by broadcaster TBS.
The man is yet to be identified.
Four people, who were 16 to 21 years old at the time, have been arrested in connection with the case, according to media reports.
A 21-year-old woman accused of conspiring with Uchida over charges including murder has had a 23-year prison sentence finalized.
She testified in her trial that Uchida pushed the victim.
The remaining two accused people were referred to family court on confinement allegations.
The male was sent to a juvenile facility, while the female was placed under probation.
