Five former St.
Louis sheriff’s workers have filed federal lawsuits against the city, alleging they were victims of discrimination.
The suits filed Thursday are on behalf of former workers claiming now-ousted Sheriff Alfred Montgomery fired them based on race, age, gender and disability.
The suits also claim he had acted in retaliation.
The suits filed Thursday are on behalf of Dawn Kehoe-Roop, Michael Gamache, Tiana Tolen, Anthony Evans and Timothy Haill.
The five are being represented by Jungle Law.
Some of the allegations come from workers who had been at the sheriff’s department for more than 30 years.
They said in court documents that Montgomery had targeted them so the department could save money by cutting more senior positions.
The suits allege Montgomery went after workers who were involved with his termination from the office in 2019.
Multiple suits say that in December 2024, Montgomery publicly handed out termination letters to him and other white supervisors but privately told nonwhite supervisors that they would be terminated.
Montgomery previously told STLPR that he had the authority to retain  or remove  staff and that everyone was given the option to stay on board if they shared his vision.
The suits allege Montgomery had targeted a worker who had a fight with him dating back to middle school.
Evans, who is Black, said he received text messages immediately after getting fired containing racial slurs, the suit says.
Tolen, another former worker, said she received a letter from the sheriff’s office saying she had voluntarily resigned after she had taken medical leave and submitted Family and Medical Leave documents.
She said that followed a car accident and doctor’s appointments to deal with work stress.
Kehoe-Roop also alleged she was fired after submitting FMLA documentation.
Tolen also argues that Montgomery targeted her for being a woman, criticizing her wrinkled sleeves and publicly humiliating her in one instance.
She also said he threatened to send her home.
The suits are the latest in a slew of legal actions against Montgomery, who was removed from office by a St.
Louis judge late last year.
Montgomery is currently in jail, waiting to face a separate federal trial.
The sheriff’s office has been overseen in an interim fashion by former St.
Louis Metropolitan Police Chief John Hayden Jr. since last October.
A spokesperson for the city and a lawyer representing the sheriff in a separate federal trial could not immediately be reached for comment.
