Germany has taken another major step toward integrating directed-energy weapons into its naval forces. 
The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) signed a contract with the High-Energy Laser Naval Demonstrator Working Group (ARGE HEL) for the development of the high-energy laser weapon system. 
The ARGE HEL consists of MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition. 
New laser weapon system 
The contract, signed on July 9, marks the transition from years of successful technology demonstrations to the development of an operational combat-ready system. 
The project will be carried out by the High-Energy Laser Naval Demonstrator Working Group (ARGE HEL), a partnership between Rheinmetall Waffe Munition and MBDA Deutschland. 
The two companies are also in the process of establishing a dedicated joint venture to oversee the programme. 
According to Rheinmetall, the new laser weapon system is expected to enter operational service by 2029, representing a significant milestone in Germany’s pursuit of advanced directed-energy capabilities . 
“This is a striking demonstration of the level of technological maturity that can be achieved when the two leading system houses, Rheinmetall and MBDA, combine their complementary capabilities to create a complete system,” said Roman Koehne, head of Rheinmetall’s Weapon and Ammunition Division. 
“The laser weapon system will provide significantly greater protection for our soldiers deployed on naval vessels, especially against drones. 
Series production will largely take place in Germany, creating new training and employment opportunities. 
We are delighted by the confidence shown in us through this contract.” 
The development programme builds upon the High-Energy Laser (HEL) demonstrator that successfully completed an extensive year-long testing campaign aboard a German Navy frigate. 
During these operational trials, the demonstrator reportedly proved its effectiveness against a variety of threats, including aerial, maritime and land-based targets under realistic operating conditions. 
Flagship technological project 
The successful trials validated the system’s tracking, engagement and integration capabilities, giving German defence authorities confidence to proceed with the next phase of development. 
“The laser weapon system developed by MBDA and Rheinmetall is a flagship technological project with a very high level of technological sophistication,” said Thomas Gottschild, Managing Director of MBDA Deutschland GmbH and Executive Vice President Strategy & Future Growth at MBDA. 
“It meets the specific requirements of the Bundeswehr and will significantly strengthen the German Navy’s defence capabilities against airborne, maritime and land-based targets. 
The containerised laser effector will also be cost-efficient for port security and other applications.” 
Laser weapons are increasingly viewed as a key component of future naval air defense due to their ability to engage drones, incoming missiles and other emerging threats at the speed of light. 
Unlike conventional missile-based interceptors, laser systems offer a virtually unlimited magazine as long as sufficient electrical power is available, while also significantly reducing the cost per engagement . 
For modern navies facing growing threats from unmanned aerial systems and swarm attacks, directed-energy weapons provide an attractive complement to traditional missile and gun-based defence systems. 
Rheinmetall stated that the majority of serial production will take place in Germany, strengthening the country’s domestic defence industrial base and ensuring national technological sovereignty in a strategically important field. 
The collaboration combines MBDA’s expertise in guided weapon systems with Rheinmetall’s experience in sensors, fire-control systems and high-energy laser technologies. 
The companies believe the programme will establish Germany among the leading nations developing operational naval laser weapons.
