A woman was fatally stabbed outside a shopping mall on California’s Central Coast on Monday, and police detained a man during the investigation, according to Capitola Police Chief Sarah Ryan.
The attack occurred shortly before 1 p.m. near the food court parking area at Capitola Mall.
The Capitola Police Department said officers responded at about 12:47 p.m. to what it described as a physical altercation near the parking lot by Clares Street.
Ryan told Lookout Santa Cruz and KSBW that the stabbing was fatal and that a man had been detained.
The mall was placed on lockdown and evacuated before closing for the rest of the day, although its Target store had reopened by midafternoon.
It was not immediately clear whether the woman and the detained man knew each other or what led to the violence.
Police had not announced an arrest or any criminal charges.
Police said there was no continuing threat to the public.
