All northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway approaching downtown Los Angeles were reopened in Boyle Heights by Thursday afternoon after a shooting involving a California Highway Patrol officer, authorities said.
Officials gave the all clear around 4 p.m. that all northbound lanes of that section of the freeway had reopened six hours after it was initially barricaded.
Traffic was blocked off north of 4th Street just before 9 a.m., causing a massive backup of traffic.
According to a CHP log, drivers were being diverted during the ongoing investigation.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the shooting on the northbound side of the freeway at 7:58 a.m. and took one person to a hospital, a department spokesperson said.
One person was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m., the California Department of Justice said in a statement later in the day.
The shooting involved a CHP officer, but specifics surrounding the incident remained unclear.
CHP officials declined to provide information on the shooting or why officers initially responded to the area.
A spokesperson for the department referred all questions to the California Department of Justice, which is tasked with investigating all officer-involved shootings.
Video from KTLA on Thursday morning showed crime scene tape on the freeway with several patrol cars in the area.
Traffic appeared to be backed up for miles.
No further information was available by Thursday afternoon.
