SANTA CRUZ — The man accused of murdering a 73-year-old woman outside the Capitola Mall Monday appeared in court Wednesday to be arraigned on murder charges.
Leila Sayar, Santa Cruz County Superior Court judge, appointed two public defense attorneys for defendant Tyler Leibelt, 19, of Santa Cruz.
The attorneys were granted a delay for their client’s arraignment until July 29.
According to prosecutor Kristal Salcido, Leibelt has been charged in a felony criminal complaint with one count of murder with special circumstances of lying in wait and a special allegation of use of a weapon.
Leibelt is currently being held in the Santa Cruz County Jail without bail.
Leibelt is accused of fatally stabbing Capitola resident Rachell Summers, in what police called a “random act of violence” near the Capitola Mall’s food court exit Monday, according to a social media release from the Capitola Police Department.
Summers, gallery manager at the Art of Santa Cruz Gallery in the mall, was pronounced dead at the scene after being discovered on Clares Street across from Macy’s with multiple stab wounds.
Leibelt called local law enforcement authorities to turn himself in shortly after and was taken into custody on the 1400 block of 41st Avenue, Capitola police Chief Sarah Ryan told the Sentinel.
Investigators have found no indication that Leibelt and Summers knew each other before the incident.
