A 20-year-old Santa Rosa man was sentenced Tuesday, July 21, to seven years in custody after pleading no contest to charges stemming from the exploitation of a minor, the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office said.
Zander Flores received the sentence from Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Vernon Nakahara.
The sentence includes one year already served in the Sonoma County jail and six years in state prison, prosecutors said.
In June, Flores pleaded no contest to felony counts of pimping, making criminal threats and engaging in oral copulation with a minor, along with a misdemeanor count of possessing child sexual abuse material.
According to prosecutors, the case began with a Santa Rosa Police Department investigation that found Flores arranged for a minor to perform sex acts for money in San Francisco while the two were in a dating relationship.
Investigators also determined Flores had engaged in sexual acts with the minor, prosecutors said.
Authorities said a second Santa Rosa man, 23-year-old Rodrico Anthony Lopez Jr., also participated in exploiting the victim.
“Unfortunately, many of the instances of pimping, pandering, and trafficking of minors we see are perpetrated by those professing to be the romantic partner of the victim,” Sonoma County District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in a statement.
“This type of exploitation compounds the trauma inflicted on victims, and often further discourages their cooperation with law enforcement.
We hope the resolution of this case can bring some closure to the victim.”
During Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, the victim described the trauma of being manipulated by someone she believed loved her, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Flores also addressed the court, accepting responsibility for his actions and expressing remorse for the harm caused to the victim and her family, prosecutors said.
As part of his sentence, Flores will be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
Lopez also pleaded no contest in June to felony charges of making criminal threats and engaging in oral copulation with a minor, as well as misdemeanor charges of possessing child sexual abuse material and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug.
25.
Under the plea agreement announced by prosecutors, Lopez is expected to serve one year in custody, followed by a suspended prison sentence of five years and eight months that would remain in effect if he successfully completes probation.
