Vallejo police shot and killed a man Monday afternoon, the department’s first fatal shooting in more than six years.
The shooting occurred shortly after 1:00 p.m. at the dead end of Mahogany Drive off Broadway Street in an industrial area of north Vallejo.
The person died at the scene, according to law enforcement sources who spoke with Open Vallejo on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.
Police took the vehicle’s passenger into custody.
Overhead footage from ABC 7 shows a gray Honda that crashed into a fence between two parked cars, with bullet holes visible in its front windshield and trunk, its rear window shattered.
The shooting occurred during a search for robbery suspects who were allegedly driving a vehicle taken in a carjacking less than an hour earlier, according to police dispatch audio.
An officer reported over the radio that he was behind a vehicle at the dead end of Mahogany Drive and had not yet activated his emergency lights.
The officer asked for the location of the nearest backup officer.
A second officer arrived and reported shots fired.
Vallejo police spokesperson Sgt.
Rashad Hollis did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
The Solano County District Attorney’s Office, which leads criminal investigations of police shootings in the county, also did not respond to a request for comment.
The shooting is the department’s first fatal incident since June 2, 2020, when Det.
Jarrett Tonn fatally shot 22-year-old Sean Monterrosa outside a Walgreens on Redwood Street during civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd; this March, the city of Vallejo agreed to pay Monterrosa’s family a record $8.5 million settlement.
It is also the first fatal shooting since Open Vallejo revealed, weeks after Monterrosa was killed, that a secretive clique of Vallejo officers had for a generation commemorated fatal shootings by bending the tips of their star-shaped badges — a ritual they called “The Badge of Honor.”
Last month, at the end of years-long legal fight, the city was forced to release its long-secret investigation into the ritual.
The investigation exonerated Tonn, who now oversees other detectives and was present to investigate Monday’s shooting.
In the six years since Open Vallejo revealed badge-bending, Vallejo police have shot and injured three people prior to Monday, Open Vallejo research shows.
From 2000-2020, Vallejo officers shot someone roughly once every four months, often fatally.
Three days after Monterrosa’s killing, then-Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced a collaborative reform agreement with the Vallejo Police Department, which the agency struggled to implement.
Becerra’s successor, Attorney General Rob Bonta, filed a pattern-and-practice lawsuit against the city in October 2023, leading to a settlement agreement that imposed sweeping, ongoing reforms on the department.
